TEACHING TIPS: HELPING ADULT LITERACY LEARNERS

  • Use clear and simple language (written and spoken)
  • Regularly check to see if the adult understands
  • Have the adult reformulate ideas in his/her own words
  • Expect a certain amount of frustration (have you ever learned a second language?)
  • Adults may need guidance (and “tricks”) to follow directions; encourage them to reformulate directions and praise them when they do well
  • Refer to concrete life situations the adult can relate to
  • Find out what motivates the adult; incorporate this into his/her learning
